Harvington Hall and the National Curriculum
Harvington Hall is an unaltered structure which gives a true picture of what a Tudor House would have been like, with authentic Elizabethan wall paintings and the best surviving series of priests' hiding places in the country. The Hall lends itself to various National Curriculum requirements:-
Key Stage 1
Historical enquiry, historic buildings, life in the past, past events.
Key Stage 2
People and change in the past, religious beliefs, historic buildings, local history, Tudor Britain.
Key Stage 3
Britain 1500 - 1750 Political and religious change. Religious Education - Conflict and reconciliation (PSE).
The Hall grounds are also suited to KS 1, 2 and 3 Science Investigations.
'Harvington Household at Home' provides Tudor activities for pupils on Wednesday and Thursday.
A Tudor Dance and Music workshop is also available by contacting Julia Lowe on 01384 441109. Schools must, however, have booked their visit to the Hall before contacting Julia.
Guides / Facilities / Preparation for your visit
Schools will be welcomed on arrival. Time is given for a visit to the toilets. If the journey has been long, a drink and a biscuit before the tour are a good idea to ensure energy for the tour.
Some schools choose to wear period clothes (especially for the 'Harvington Household' days). Bear in mind that a few children will be going into the hides and may get dusty. Also dress warmly as the Hall can be cold especially in the Winter months.
School groups are shown round the Hall in groups of no more than 20, by experienced guides who are mostly ex-teachers; the tours last for about an hour and a half.
There are gardens suitable for picnics but there is some indoor accommodation should the weather be poor. There is also a shop which can be visited during the lunch break.
We cannot allow pupils back into the Hall after the tour for insurance reasons, so most schools use the afternoon session for an exercise, which can be completed in the garden if the weather is fine or in the parish room. You are most welcome to allow pupils to relax in the walled field adjacent to the Hall (games should not be played on the moated island).
Accessibility
Please discuss with us before hand any special needs of pupils who are disabled. We have guides trained in special needs.
INSET / Conferencing
Harvington Hall would make an excellent setting for an INSET day or for teacher meetings away from the school environment. We have a variety of rooms for hire as well as catering facilities on site.
